Here are some great free patterns and instructions for making cat toys, pillows, pet beds, and quilts.

The following are some fun sewing crafts to make presents for cats or create quilts that feature cat patterns.

Free Patterns for Sewing Cat Toys

There are a number of patterns for handcrafted cat toys. Some of the better ones include these fabulous cat toy plushies, which can be stuffed with catnip or hung from a string. Templates are provided to make birds, fish, and mice. Please note that because these items have pieces that might be chewed off (such as eyes, feet, or tails), cats should be supervised when playing with them.

Debbie Colgrove has created a pattern for larger, fluffier mice, recommending fleece or fur for the material. Detailed instructions are provided, along with a photo of a cat appreciating the finished products. Colgrove also provides a template for a very simple fish-shaped toy that can be made from fabric scraps.

Patterns for Cat Beds and Pillows

Craft and Fabric Links offers patterns for an adorable bean bag cat and a pillow in the shape of a sleeping cat. An additional free pattern for a square pillow featuring a cheerful cat is available at the Holiday Spot.

Debbie Colgrove provides detailed instructions for sewing a luxurious small pet bed that requires only fabric, piping, and stuffing. However, making a cat bed doesn’t necessarily even require the purchase of any fabric. For those who like repurposing old items, there are instructions on WikiHow for making a cat bed out of an old sweater. Using a tapestry needle and yarn, the arms of the sweater are sewn into a circle and stuffed to become the sides of the bed, while the torso of the sweater forms its base. This simple project takes little time and requires few materials.

Free Cat Quilting Patterns

Quilting has become extremely popular again in recent years, and there has been a proliferation of creative pattern ideas. Among the most beautiful of these is Janet Wickel’s free applique cat quilt pattern, which features artistic cat silhouettes in various poses looking out over garden scenes.

For those seeking a fun quilting challenge, Patty Carey’s Kool Kats Kwilt, made up of tessellating cat shapes, provides the opportunity to create something unique.

A variant pattern for a cat with a 3-dimensional tail can be found at Erica’s Craft & Sewing Center. CompuQuilt also offers a PDF template for very simple geometrical cat silhouette.

Judy Bellingham has created several cat quilting patterns, including a pretty cat silhouette with hearts, simple cats that can be dressed up in various outfits, and Watermelon Cat (a great pattern for a young child’s quilt). Another cute pattern for a kid's quilt featuring a cartoon-style cat is provided by Ute-Barbara Skjønberg.

Piece by Number offers a complex pattern for Bow-Tie Kitty in a Basket and a slightly simpler pattern for Mama Cat and Baby in a Basket, and Quilt Design Northwest provides a free quilting pattern featuring funny little square smiling cat faces called Here, Kitty, Kitty, which can be modified from cats to dogs if desired. Additional free cat quilt patterns can be found at Quiltaholics and Quiltzine.
